Parent Educator Q&A

Two of our parent educators answer frequently asked questions about their roles.

Is Parents as Teachers free?

Yes, Parents as Teachers is a free program for all resident families that have children aged prenatal through pre-k.

How can I enroll in the Parents as Teachers program?

I  live in Lee’s Summit but my children would not attend an LSR7 district school. Can I still enroll?

No, you must live in the LSR7 school district attendance area to enroll. If you live in a different attendance area, you will need to call the Parents as Teachers office in that attendance area to enroll.

I am pregnant and have not had my baby yet, can I still enroll?

Absolutely! Our program serves families with children prenatal through prekindergarten.

What can I expect on a home visit?

Parent Educators share age-appropriate activities for children, share developmental milestones, information on child development topics and offer support for the well-being of the family. Home visits last a minimum of one hour; Parent educators and families decide together on frequency of visits (monthly, bi-monthly, and quarterly are most common).

What does a developmental screening for a child over the age of 3 years old look like?

A developmental screening is provided by Parents as Teachers to all children ages 3-Prek. This screening is conducted by a certified parent educator utilizing a screening tool that assesses skills in the areas of cognitive, language, motor, social-emotional, and self-help skills. In addition to those areas, a vision, hearing and articulation screening is also administered.

I am interested in a developmental screening for my 3-prek age child. How do I sign up?

Visit our Screenings tab to check for availability and to schedule.

Are you on our wait list to participate in home visits with a parent educator?

Please ensure your visit availability is up-to-date with our office as we typically carry a waitlist. While you wait, you are still able to participate in a developmental screening and any scheduled group connections listed on our website.
